The First Visit

At your first visit, new patients are seen by one of the dentists for an exam. Depending on what kind of appointment is needed the exam would be for a specific area of concern or a full Comprehensive Oral Examination.

A Comprehensive Oral Examination can be compared to a yearly physical that is completed by your medical doctor; however, this exam is done every 3 to 5 years and focuses on your head, mouth, and neck. This exam is typically just over an hour depending on the extent of your dental and medical history as well as current condition. The exam covers all aspects of your oral health including your past and current medical history, dental history, as well as checking all teeth, gums, bone and muscles.

Cleanings are not booked at the same time as the Comprehensive Oral Examination because the doctor must assess that there are no health concerns that would impede this dental treatment. One example is patients who have had a knee replacement surgery require taking antibiotics prior to dental cleanings to prevent the chance of infection.
